This weekend, the Luxton Fall Fair celebrates its 102nd anniversary by adding new attractions to its lineup of crowd-pleasing favourites.
The three-day fair showcases urban agriculture, in recognition of the renewed interest many people are taking in growing their own food. "People seem more interested in farming these days," says Ian McKenzie of the Metchosin Farmers' Institute, which hosts the fair. "They come to see the poultry, the antique farm equipment and the historical displays."
The fair attracted about 8,500 people last year.
This year, five chainsaw carvers will be featured throughout the fair. Their completed works will then be auctioned off.
The event will include a display of historical farming equipment, clay-baking demonstrations, steam tractors at work and blacksmithing demonstrations.
Midway rides and a motocross demonstration will appeal to thrill-seekers. Fair-goers will also be able to try out the bikes on a closed track.
Here is a brief schedule of events:
Friday: Special-needs day, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. General admission 4 to 7 p.m.
(midway will stay open later).
Saturday: Pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. Exhibits open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Stage entertainment runs from 11: 30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children's games run from 1 to 3 p.m.
Sunday: Exhibits run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stage entertainment is on from 11: 30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Vendors include artisans, crafters and goods from silk to spice. Midway rides open from 4 p.m. Friday, and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
