Summer's not yet over - there's still Metchosin Day. Celebrated the first Sunday after Labour Day for the past 45 years, the community gathering promises fun for the whole family.
This year, the event boasts a pet show, bike-park jam, pie contest, cake bakeoff, displays of garden produce, hay rides, face painting, blacksmith displays, sheep shearing and chicken bingo (check out the event to find out how that works).
There will be more than 100 vendors, all-day entertainment and a display of vintage cars. Equestrian events run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with gymnastics on horseback, breed demos and miniature horses.
Metchosin's emergency operations will set up a display showcasing the damage an 8.0-magnitude earthquake can cause.
A walk-through model home will be set up to educate the public on strategies to make their houses earthquake-proof.
The event is free.
It starts at 8 a.m. Sunday with a five-kilometre run followed by a pancake breakfast hosted by the Boy Scouts. Entertainment runs from 9: 30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The community house tea-room is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a lamb and salmon barbecue will be served at 5 p.m.
An art show runs from noon to 5 p.m.
Metchosin Day takes place on the grounds of the Metchosin Municipal Hall, behind the fire hall on Happy Valley Road.
Access is by the driveway to the right of the fire hall.
Plenty of free parking is available.
