Tania: The Right Gear Makes a Difference

When I won this challenge, it came as a big surprise that I’d be receiving workout gear in addition to the personal training and nutrition support. Talk about helping set me up for success! I was really excited but also, more than a bit intimidated.

When I won this challenge, it came as a big surprise that I’d be receiving workout gear in addition to the personal training and nutrition support.  Talk about helping set me up for success!  I was really excited but also, more than a bit intimidated.  Clothing stores scare me.  A store that focusses on healthy living, fitness and running – terrified me.  Part of this is because I’m much larger than the average person and have a really hard time finding things that fit.  To be honest, I’m also secretly afraid that staff and other customers are looking at me and wondering why I’m there…

So I made my way to FrontRunners on Vancouver Street, took a few deep breaths before entering the store, and reminded myself that finding gear was a part of the journey. The FrontRunners team was AMAZING.  A special shout out to Dave and Torben who were patient (and up for the challenge) in finding the perfect pair of shoes for my feet, my body type, the way I walk, and my anticipated exercise regime.  I think I tried on a dozen or more pairs of shoes and finally landed on a pretty pair of GT-2170 Asics (see photo).  I also left equipped with socks, a water bottle and a new sports bra.  The Capri pants and micro-fibre shirts are on order and I hope to have them soon.

While I had a difficult time finding clothing, Dave (sales guy extraordinaire) had no problem looking in catalogues to find something larger, to order in for me.  People who have faced similar challenges and can identify with what I’m saying need to summon up the courage to go into these stores and ask for help.  Have someone properly fit you for a pair of shoes and invest the time/money to ensure you have a solid foundation for your workouts.  Having the right gear (fitted by a professional) makes a difference.

My workouts at Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre involve circuit training 3x per week with my hard-core trainer Dana, and cardio 3x per week on my own (gotta love the elliptical machine).  The workouts are more than hard, but my feet are comfortable thanks to my great shoes, and the ‘ladies’ well supported :-).  I can’t wait to have the rest of my gear.  I think it's going to change the way I feel while I’m busting my butt and sweating hard.
