Repositioning gets a new twist

Twice a year, cruise lines reposition their ships across the Atlantic, either to Europe (spring) or North America (fall).
Twice a year, cruise lines reposition their ships across the Atlantic, either to Europe (spring) or North America (fall). In many cases, the voyage is unique, either because of the itinerary or because it鈥檚 a combo cruise 鈥 the crossing is combined with a cruise a week or more before or after the Transatlantic crossing.

Selling these migrations can sometimes be difficult unless they鈥檙e bargains. Now, to help fill four of its ships, Royal Caribbean has a plan I haven鈥檛 seen before on one of the large mass-market lines for what are mainly sea-day crossings.

Until Feb. 15, Royal Caribbean is offering a free 鈥淧remium Beverage Package鈥 for two when passengers book a balcony (or higher) category stateroom on any of four Transatlantic cruises in April. Note: These are for new bookings made as of Jan. 24.

The cruises are:

n Navigator of the Seas鈥

15-night sailing from New Orleans to Rome (Civitavecchia) on April 6 (starting price of $449, balcony $1,139)

n Independence of the Seas' 13-night sailing from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale to Southampton on April 7 (starting price of $509, balcony $1,299)

n Brilliance of the Seas鈥 11-night sailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Lisbon on April 13 (starting price of $299, balcony $799)

n Adventure of the Seas鈥 14-night sailing from San Juan to Southampton on April 21 (starting price of $459, balcony $1,549)

While passengers in the inside cabins are not eligible for the beverage package, all the inside-cabin prices 鈥 as of time of writing and based on per-person and double capacity 鈥 were less than $40 a night.

There are some rules and you will find them from your cruise agent or at royalcaribbean.com

The Port of Halifax is going to be the first on the Atlantic Coast and the second in sa国际传媒 to have the capability to connect cruise ships to shore-based power. The first was the Port of Vancouver.

In Halifax, port officials expect to be able to connect those ships with that capability by the start of the 2014 cruise season.

It鈥檚 a big savings on fuel and, most importantly, on emissions even though the facility will be able to serve only one ship at a time.

If you鈥檙e travelling on Princess, Celebrity or Norwegian ships, you鈥檙e going to be able to experience Zumba, the latest craze in fitness.

And if you don't know what 鈥淶umba鈥 is, here is the way it was described to me: 鈥渄ancing as a fun, joyful music-inspired fitness class that combines all genres of Latin music.鈥 Legend has it the whole thing began more than 20 years ago when a fitness instructor in Colombia forgot to take his aerobics music to a class and substituted tapes he had in his backpack 鈥 traditional and merengue music.

It must be hot鈥hat's expected of anything that's Latin, right? On cruise ships, Princess started it, Celebrity followed and now Norwegian is getting into Zumba. Here is the best news 鈥 the classes are free.
