Saltspring Island folk singer and songwriter Valdy is one of the musical highlights Sunday at the Highland Fling, a family picnic, entertainment and games event in the District of Highlands.

Organizers call the event "a fun, rural celebration of the simple life."

Valdy will share the stage with Karel Roessingh, former mayor and current Highlands councillor and a world-class jazz pianist who played on Valdy's recent album. Expect to hear some of Valdy's golden oldies, children's songs as well as some selections from his new album.

Kicking off the entertainment at noon will be Scottish folk singer Jim Brannigan.

He will be joined by Victoriabased Indie group Fir Cone, a sixpiece band. At the end of the event, all of the entertainers will join Valdy and Roessingh on stage for a group rendition of his song Simple Life.

When not listening to the artists, people can play family musical bingo (nicknamed Flingo) and watch a talent show.

There will be kids' crafts, races, games, including the popular hay toss. There will be art in the park and a small farmers market.

Admission is free. The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the historic Caleb Pike Homestead, 1589 Millstream Rd.
