With reservations now open for some sa国际传媒 Parks campgrounds, the race will soon be on to reserve a campsite for the May long weekend.

Campsites can be reserved four months before the arrival date. This year, the long weekend falls on May 17 and 18, with the Victoria Day holiday on May 19.

sa国际传媒 Parks said Monday that 60 new campsites have been added on Vancouver Island, and in Kelowna and Mission.

China Beach campground in Juan de Fuca Park has eight new sites that people can park at and five new walk-in sites that will open in May, along with flush toilets and two accessible showers. Thirty-three new campsites — 22 drive-in and 11 walk-in — were added at China Beach last spring.

Reservations for the new sites at China Beach will open at a later date, while reservations for new sites at Kelowna’s Fintry Park and Mission’s Rolley Lake Park open at 7 a.m. on Wednesday for May 15 arrivals.

Fintry Park has 30 new sites with power hookups, along with new flush toilets, an upgraded dishwashing station, a potable water tap along with garbage and recycling containers.

Rolley Lake Park, meanwhile, has 17 new walk-in sites. According to ministry staff, the campground has a communal day-use shelter, bike racks, picnic tables and bear-proof storage.

While campers can make reservations for sites, the Ministry of Environment and Parks says half the province’s 10,700 sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The opening of reservations at Golden Ears Park near Maple Ridge will be delayed while repairs to Golden Ears Parkway are underway in the wake of damage from an atmospheric river in October.

The ministry said updates about the progress of the work and the opening date for reservations will be posted on the BC Parks website.

Work is also continuing to repair the Berg Lake Trail in Mount Robson Park near Valemount, which was damaged by extreme weather in 2021 and again in 2024.

The Environment Ministry said since 2017, more than 2,000 new campsites have been added to BC Parks and recreation sites in regions with the highest demand.
