A blue-green algae advisory has been issued for Durrance Lake.

The warning, issued by the Capital Regional District in consultation with Island Health, follows previous advisories for Beaver Lake and Prior Lake.

The algae usually produce a visible blue-green sheen on the water that looks like surface scum, but can be present even if there is no apparent sheen.

They produce toxins that can cause headaches and abdominal pain in people, and lead to fatal liver damage in dogs.

Park users are advised to avoid contact with the algae and keep dogs on a leash to prevent them from swimming or drinking at the affected lakes.
