Cadboro Bay residents are being warned to watch out for a cougar after one of the animals was spotted in the area on Tuesday night.
The cougar was seen at 7:15 p.m. in the 3500-block of Beach Drive, near the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and Gyro Park.
The sa国际传媒 Conservation Officer Service was notified, Oak Bay police said.
Police warned area residents to be aware of their surroundings and keep a close eye on children and pets — especially around dawn and dusk.
They also advised against walking or jogging alone, and to travel in groups if possible.
Cougars can be deterred by clapping or shouting, police said.
“If you see a cougar, maintain a safe distance and back away slowly,” they said. “Never run.”
Preventive measures include storing garbage securely, keeping pet food indoors and cleaning up fruit that has fallen from trees, police said.
