Cowichan Tribes is buying North Cowichan’s former RCMP detachment from the municipality for $1.2 million.
The First Nation, which takes over the 1.7-hectare site at 6060 sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Ave. on Jan. 15, plans to use it for the Tribes’ emergency services and public works teams.
Built in 1980, the building was constructed for a force of 30 officers, and is less than half the size of the RCMP detachment’s $47-million replacement, which officially opened this year at 6430 Ford Rd.
Part of the original site extends over Bings Creek. The sale includes a covenant registered on the property title to protect the creek from future development.
The covenant also allows North Cowichan to carry out restoration and maintenance work that’s needed on the creek, a statement from the municipality said.
Plans call for restoring a section of the creek’s north channel next year.
The sale does not include a 2.6-metre-wide strip at the front of the property because it’s needed for construction of an active transportation project along sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Avenue, the municipality said.
