The Capital Regional District has increased tipping fees at Hartland Landfill for general refuse, controlled waste and asbestos.

The changes, which will come into effect Jan. 2, are intended to recover the cost of managing the material, the CRD says.

The general refuse tipping fee will increase to $155 per tonne from$150, which aligns with the fee in other regional districts on Vancouver Island.

The fee to dispose of controlled waste — such as animal carcasses, large amounts of animal fecal waste, sharps, boats, demolition waste and boats — and asbestos will increase to $214 per tonne from the current $157.

The fine for improper disposal of asbestos will also increase to $1,000 per infraction, up from the current $200.

Hartland Landfill receives about 180,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste each year.

The site provides collection for recycling, household hazardous waste, salvageable items as well as yard and garden waste collection and processing, controlled waste disposal and landfill service for both commercial and residential customers.

According to the CRD, at current filling rates, the landfill could hit its capacity in 2100.
