A man in his 60s is in serious condition in hospital after being dragged with his bike for about 20 metres under a large commercial truck Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of the Patricia Bay Highway and Island View Road.
Central Saanich police Sgt. Paul Brailey said officers responded to the incident about 12:20 p.m.
Brailey said the cyclist and the truck driver were both waiting in the northbound left-hand turn lane, but the truck driver didn’t see the cyclist when proceeding on the green light, and struck and dragged him.
The driver stopped when people in other vehicles were able to alert him, Brailey said.
Central Saanich firefighters had to remove parts of the truck to safely extract the cyclist, he said.

The collision led to lane closures on the highway in both directions between Danica Place and Island View Road.
