A fire on New Year’s Eve that scorched part of Alexander Elementary School in Duncan has been deemed suspicious and police are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

The blaze occurred about 10 p.m. and caused significant damage to a pod classroom, according to the Cowichan Valley School District.

Classes are still expected to resume on Monday as students return from the holiday break.

The fire department prevented the fire from spreading and the main building was not affected.

Students will move to other areas of the school while repairs are made.

About 350 students from kindergarten to Grade 7 are enrolled in the school.

Cathy Schmidt, chair of the Cowichan Valley School District, said the board was grateful for the quick response of the North Cowichan Fire Department to ensure the damage to the school was minimized.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the fire or who has information to contact North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.
