Two people were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds after a shootout in Esquimalt Sunday night, and both Royal Jubilee and Victoria General ERs were temporarily placed on lockdown.

Victoria police responded to reports of multiple shots being fired outside a residence in the 1000-block of Lyall Street just before 10:30 p.m.

One person is being treated for life-threatening injuries, said police. The other has non-life-threatening injuries.

VicPD said the shooting is believed to be targeted. At the request of police, Island Health said the Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospital emergency rooms were placed on lockdowns from 11:30 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. on Monday as extra security was brought in.

Patients were not turned away while the increased security measures were in place, said Island Health.

No arrests had been made in the shooting by Monday, police said. VicPD’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
