Several of Greater Victoria’s municipalities are joining the province’s pilot project to allow electric kick scooters on their streets.
Langford, Central Saanich, Oak Bay, Sidney, View Royal and Esquimalt are joining Victoria and Saanich in allowing the scooters on their streets.
The province’s pilot project started in 2021 and has been renewed to 2028 to assess the potential of the scooters.
In pilot communities, electric scooters should be ridden in bike lanes, or as near as possible to the right side of the street on roads without cycling infrastructure that have a speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour or less. On roads with a speed limit over 50 km/h, they can only be used in a designated cycling lane.
The province’s rules say riders must be at least 16 and a helmet must be worn. The scooters cannot be ridden on sidewalks or in crosswalks. Riders must use a bell or horn to alert when passing others and they must not carry passengers or tow people.
No licence or insurance is needed.
