Highway 4 closed due to debris, some BC Ferries sailings cancelled for wind

The first storm of the season is bringing heavy rain and high winds to Vancouver Island, leading to road closures and cancelled sailings.

DriveBC about 5:30 p.m. Friday, warning of “major delays” as crews work to remove the debris.

Areas that could be hard hit include West and Inland Vancouver Island including Tofino, Ucluelet, Port Alberni, Bamfield, Port Renfrew, Lake Cowichan, Gold River, Zeballos and Tahsis, Environment sa国际传媒 said.

On East Vancouver Island from Duncan to Nanaimo, a special weather statement warned of prolonged rain and gusty winds through the weekend.

A wind warning was also in place for coastal sections of East Vancouver Island from Nanoose Bay to Campbell River, along with Hornby Island, Denman Island, Quadra Island and Texada Island.

No warnings had been issued for Greater Victoria as of 6:30 p.m. Friday.

High winds over the Strait of Georgia prompted BC Ferries to Friday, including six between Departure Bay in Nanaimo and Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver.

The affected sailings are the 3:20 p.m., 5:55 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. departures from Departure Bay, and the 3:45 p.m., 6:35 p.m. and 10:10 p.m. departures from Horseshoe Bay.

Six sailings between Little River (Comox) and Westview (Powell River) were also cancelled:

  • 9:55 a.m. departing Little River
  • 11:50 a.m. departing Westview
  • 3:25 p.m. departing Little River
  • 5:15 p.m. departing Westview
  • 7:10 p.m. departing Little River
  • 8:45 p.m. departing Westview
