Island search crews join effort to find missing six-year-old in Central Interior

Multiple search-and-rescue crew from Vancouver Island have joined in the search for a six-year-old girl missing from her home about 250 kilometres west of Prince George.

RCMP said Oaklynn Schweder was last seen outside her home in the small Central Interior community of Southbank near Burns Lake at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

They describe the girl as “on the autism spectrum” and non-verbal.

Police said they have “numerous resources” in the area, including search-and-rescue crews from across sa国际传媒 who are working with the girl’s family in the effort to find her.

Six members of Nanaimo Search and Rescue and two canine search dogs were flown out to the Burns Lake area on Saturday. Members of Comox Valley Search and Rescue and Campbell River Search and Rescue command staff were also flown out.

Since Oaklynn went missing on Thursday, hundreds of people have checked into the Skin Tyee First Nation band office to assist in the search.

According to the family, Oaklynn likes to go into small spaces and communicates by making noises and babbling.

People are being asked to carpool or take a shuttle bus to the area as space is limited and congestion may hinder the search effort.

The girl was last seen wearing a red and blue plaid dress, leggings with white bow ties, and pink socks.
