Law students organize walk to protest sexual violence

University of Victoria law students will hold their own version of Toronto's "Slut Walk" on Tuesday, to protest against sexual violence.

University of Victoria law students will hold their own version of Toronto's "Slut Walk" on Tuesday, to protest against sexual violence.

The Day of Action Against Sexual Violence was organized by UVic's Association of Women and the Law following a sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman on March 25.

The woman, who had become separated from friends walking from one party to another, was picked up near the intersection of Cedar Hill Cross Road and Cedar Hill Road by a group of men in a vehicle. Saanich Police say the woman was physically and sexually assaulted by up to four men before being let go in downtown Victoria.

After the attack, police issued a warning to women, suggesting that they travel in groups and stick to well-lit areas.

Stephanie Ashley-Pryce, one of the protest organizers, said such comments blame the victim, rather than focusing on the behaviour of men.

In Toronto, a walk is being held today in response to a comment by a police officer in that city who said women can prevent sexual assault by not dressing as "sluts."

Those attending Victoria's Tuesday event are encouraged to get "gussied up" in a tube top and heavy make-up, or go to the other extreme and wear a bonnet and crinolines.

No arrests have yet been made in connection with the Saanich attack.
