A teen with a learner’s licence faces $822 in fines after he was pulled over in Oak Bay for excessive speeding, and police found open cannabis and too many passengers in the vehicle.
The 16-year-old also turned out to be driving a vehicle that belonged to a friend’s parent.
Oak Bay police clocked the vehicle going 121 km/h in a 50 km/h zone southbound on Foul Bay Road, near Lansdowne Road, last Friday.
When police stopped the driver, who had a Class 7 Learner’s licence, they found he had three other passengers, which isn’t allowed, as well as an open cannabis container.
Those with a learner’s licence in sa国际传媒 are only allowed to travel with a supervisor — age 25 or older and a valid class 1-5 licence — and one additional passenger and must display the L sign on the back of the vehicle. They cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
The teenager ended up with a $483 fine for excessive speed, $109 for too many passengers, $230 for open cannabis in a vehicle and failure to display the L designation on the vehicle.
The vehicle was also impounded for seven days.
When police called the registered owner of the vehicle, they discovered the owner’s son was in the vehicle, but wasn’t the driver.
“The owner advised they would follow up with their son,” police said in a statement.
