Oceanside RCMP say a 40-year-old man has been charged with breaking-and-entering after being found inside a Nanoose Bay home.
Witnesses reported to police on Dec. 11 that they believed someone had broken into a neighbouring residence in the 1600-block of Beaver Creek Wharf Road — and was possibly still there.
Police responded immediately and found and arrested a suspect inside who was in possession of jewelry from the home.
“The witnesses who called police were vital in helping police make an arrest and likely preventing further crime,” said Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth. “This incident is a reminder of how important it is to keep in touch with your neighbours, be aware of irregular activities in your neighbourhood and to report suspicious activities to police.”
Police said residential break-and-enters are usually rare in the Oceanside area, but six have been reported since late October.
In each one, a male suspect claiming to be a roof or gutter cleaner has been seen in the vicinity canvassing for work.
Investigators are trying to determine if there are any links between the previous incidents and the latest one in Nanoose Bay.
Timothy Dafoe, who is of no fixed address but has past ties to the Oceanside area, has been charged with break-and-enter to a dwelling.
He remains in custody pending a court appearance Thursday.
Police said area residents can find out about crime-prevention programs such as Block Watch through the Oceanside Community Safety website at.
