The man charged in connection with the deaths of a Saanich couple, who were killed when a stolen Honda swerved in front of their oncoming motorcycle on the Malahat Saturday, will stay behind bars until his bail hearing.

Lucas Ian Brown, 25, of North Vancouver, appeared in court Tuesday and was remanded into custody until his next court appearance March 2.

Brown is charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, failing to remain at the scene of a crash causing death, possession of stolen property over $5,000, fraudulent use of a credit card and two counts of break and enter.

Police allege Brown broke into a home in North Vancouver, stole a car and other items, paid for a ferry out of the Departure Bay terminal with a stolen credit card and then caused the deadly crash on the Malahat Saturday afternoon. Brown allegedly fled the scene of the crash and broke into a business in Bamberton before he was arrested Sunday morning.

Police are recommending Brown, who is well known to police in the Lower Mainland, be denied bail, said South Island Traffic Services spokesman Const. Mike Halskov.

Larry Machnee, 58, and his partner of 12 years, 56-year-old Martha Ralph, were killed in the crash.
