Tofino RCMP and the sa国际传媒 Coroners Service are investigating the sudden death Monday morning of a 29-year-old woman in Opitsaht on Meares Island.

Police and sa国际传媒 Ambulance paramedics were called to a home on the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation reserve at 9:20 a.m., shortly after she was found dead by a family member, according to Island district spokesman Cpl. Darren Lagan.

The woman is from Esowista, a village near Tofino that is also part of Tla-o-qui-aht band lands, and was visiting family in Opitsaht, Lagan said.

Investigators from the RCMP's forensic identification section and Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit were at the scene Monday and yesterday. The sa国际传媒 Coroners Service is still trying to determine the cause of death.

The woman's identity is being withheld at the request of the family, RCMP said.

"There is absolutely nothing blatantly obvious to indicate we have something [criminally] suspicious," Lagan said.

Lagan said determining the cause of death could take time if it comes down to toxicology reports.

Meares Island is on the west coast of Vancouver Island, near Tofino.
