Medical emergency likely caused Saanich crash

Saanich police think a medical emergency may have caused an elderly driver to blow through the intersection of Derby and Cedar Hill roads, clip a hatchback and send it flipping upside down yesterday around 1:30 p.m.

The man, in his mid-70s, may have had his foot locked on the gas pedal, police say, because after hitting the Nissan Versa he barrelled straight down Derby Road for about 100 metres before crashing into a tree.

The Saanich man was taken to hospital with minor head injuries while 69-year-old Tom Wood crawled out of his overturned car unscathed.

Wood said the grey Volvo station wagon clipped his back bumper as he drove through the intersection on Cedar Hill.

More than a dozen witnesses gathered around the two crash sites and traffic was blocked off on parts of Cedar Hill Road and Derby as police tried to clear the scene.

Saanich police also dealt with another crash earlier yesterday afternoon when an elderly woman, who likely mistook the gas for the brake, crashed her car into the Crazy Mike's video store in the Shelbourne Village Square. No one was injured.
