Saanich police say they saw a “significant” increase in the number of traffic tickets issued last year from the year before, but the number of motor-vehicle incidents causing injury or involving pedestrians and cyclists dropped.
Tickets in 2024 for speeding, distracted driving and other Motor Vehicle Act offences totalled 4,259 — well above the 3,448 issued in 2023.
But motor vehicle incidents causing injury dropped to 174 in 2024 from 217 in 2023, while MVIs involving pedestrians fell to 18 in 2024 from 24 in 2023, and cyclist-related MVIs dropped to 43 in 2024 from 48 in 2023.
The statistics follow news last week that Saanich police dealt with a record number of impaired drivers last year, with 628 drivers having their licences suspended due to impaired driving, easily surpassing the 468 total in 2023.
