Multiple vehicle windows smashed, tires flattened in overnight spree in Nanaimo

The majority of the damage occurred between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m., police say

Forty-two vehicles were damaged in Nanaimo overnight Wednesday in what RCMP are calling “a campaign of destruction.”

Windows were smashed, tires were flattened and side mirrors were broken in the rampage, with the majority of the damage occurring between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m., police said.

The targeted vehicles were parked on the street or in parkades and parking lots.

Nine vehicle owners on Harwell Road alone reported that their driver’s-side window had been shattered — officers believe a small projectile fired at the windows might have been the cause.

Three vehicles parked at Vancouver Island University had windows smashed, while other damage reports came from the 6900-block of Island Highway north, the 6600-block of Mary Ellen Drive, Garner Crescent, the 400-block of Pine St, the 3800- and 2500-blocks of Jingle Pot Road and 650 Terminal Ave.

“This is very disturbing and has caused immense disruption and significant financial loss to many vehicle owners,” said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien.

Several vehicles of interest in the case have been identified.

Anyone with dashcam video, surveillance footage or eyewitness evidence is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
