New Vic High School to host open house for the public

The open house will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the 1260 Grant St. site in Fernwood.

The community is invited to take a look at the new Victoria High School on Sunday, when students will be on hand to talk about the recently completed building.

The open house will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 1260 Grant St. site in Fernwood.

Parking will be available in lots off Grant Street and Gladstone Avenue.

Sunday visitors can taken in volleyball games on the school’s new outdoor courts, along with other student performances, and can also view the archives and museum operated by the Vic High Alumni Association.

Students moved into the new school last month after ­taking classes at the former S.J. Willis Education Centre while ­construction, which began in 2020, was underway.

The $100-million seismic upgrade and expansion took close to four years.

There is now room for 1,000 students, up from 800.

Vic High is the oldest high school in sa国际传媒 west of Winnipeg, and opened in 1876 with 34 students in a two-room log building on the grounds of what is now Central Middle School.

The revamped Vic High complex includes a neighbourhood learning centre that will offer child care by 2025, while the historic facade of the school has been retained.

Holdovers from the past also include stained glass and interior wood panels, and the school attic where students signed the walls for decades.
