A former Victoria police officer with more than 20 years of experience has been named Oak Bay’s new deputy chief.

Kris Rice will step into the role on July 3. He was most recently the officer in charge of operations for the Nelson Police Department after leaving the Victoria Police Department.

Rice will take over from Julie Chanin, who became Greater Victoria’s first female police chief when she was sworn in on Friday, replacing Mark Fisher. Fisher retired on Friday as Oak Bay’s police chief after a 33-year career.

“The board is thrilled to have Kris join the Oak Bay Police Department as our deputy chief constable,” said Kevin Murdoch, Oak Bay mayor and police board chair.

“Kris is a demonstrated progressive, collaborative leader with a strong commitment to community policing and relationship building. We know that he will be a valuable addition to the Oak Bay Police Department.”

Chanin said Rice is known for having a strong sense of duty and a commitment to creating a safer community.
