Oak Bay High School students and staff were told to “hold and secure” as police investigated a weapons report in the area Friday morning.

Oak Bay police responded to a report at 9:40 a.m. that a man was sleeping near Bee Street and Cadboro Bay Road with a handgun showing under his sleeping bag.

Oak Bay and Saanich police and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team flooded the area and arrested the 27-year-old man without incident.

The firearm was determined to be a pellet gun resembling a Sig Sauer handgun.

Oak Bay police said the gun was not used in a threatening manner or observed directly in the man’s possession.

The man was released from custody pending a future court date for breaching previous conditions of release, which included not to possess weapons or replicas of firearms.

“Out of an abundance of caution, Oak Bay High School was placed in a hold and secure status while this event unfolded and concluded peacefully,” said police.

Some students had been texting their parents, saying they are being told to hold in their classrooms and stay away from windows in the school.
