One person dead after Saanich condo fire

Twenty-two firefighters responded to a building in the 3100-block of Tillicum Road on Sunday evening after reports of flames coming from the top floor of the building.

One person has died following a weekend fire at a four-storey condominium building on Tillicum Road, the Saanich Fire Department has confirmed.

Assistant Deputy Chief Craig Ford said the victim, who was transported to hospital with injuries on Sunday night, has since died from injuries suffered in the fire.

“It’s the hardest, especially in this case where you’ve taken somebody alive to hospital and you know our firefighters put their best efforts in but unfortunately that was not enough in order to save this person,” Ford told the sa国际传媒. “They take it hard.”

Twenty-two firefighters responded to the scene in the 3100-block of Tillicum Road on Sunday evening after reports of flames coming off the top floor of the building.

Ford said firefighters took about two hours to extinguish blaze.

He confirmed the fire appeared to start in the unit where the victim as found.

The cause of the fire is not yet known; an investigation continues.

Ford said the damage could have been much worse considering the size of the building.

He could not be certain of how many occupants have been displaced by the fire but said the building is not habitable at this point.

“All occupants were displaced due to some water damage as well as the electrical and gas happened to be shut down at the building,” he said.”The building’s fire safety systems were not serviceable after the fire so it has to be repaired before we can let people back in.”
