A firefighter working on a fire Thursday at a vacant Oyster River home had his foot break through a floor but was not hurt, the fire chief says.

Bruce Green said the home was possibly going to be torn down anyway, and is likely a write-off after the fire.

“The fire went through the roof,” he said.

Green said the fire department was alerted about 12:30 p.m., and with the hot, dry conditions in the area any fire “is pretty stressful for the neighbourhood.”

“Especially this time of year, we’re wondering where the sparks are going and embers are going to make sure they don’t catch anything else on fire.”

Green said the owners have been staying in a recreational vehicle about three metres from the house and firefighters were able to keep it from being damaged.

The cause of the blaze was determined to have been a short circuit in a breaker box, he said.

Oyster River is small community between Campbell River and Courtenay.
