Nanaimo RCMP are investigating after a motorist reported seeing a woman who appeared to be in distress on Thursday night.

The man told police that the incident unfolded about 9 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Jingle Pot and Mostar roads.

He said a woman in her early 20s was walking quickly and appeared to be waving her arms at him, while a dark-coloured, older-model SUV with a heavy tint on its windows followed slowly behind her.

The caller said he continued driving for a few minutes, then decided to turn around and go back to the spot where he last saw the woman.

By the time he got there, the woman was nowhere to be seen and the vehicle he had seen was speeding away.

He said he watched the vehicle turn onto what he believes was Porcupine Hill Trail.

The man was unable to say how many people had been in the vehicle — possibly a Nissan Pathfinder or Ford Explorer — or to provide a licence plate number.

“There may be nothing to this, but out of an abundance of caution investigators are following up and are looking to speak with the woman or the driver of the vehicle,” said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien.

The woman is described as white and five-foot-six with light-coloured hair to her mid-back, and was wearing a light-coloured hoodie with dark pants.

Residents in the area of Jingle Pot and Mostar roads and nearby streets, including Rosstown Road, are asked to check door-bell cameras and dashcam video.

Motorists who were in the area from 8:45 to 9:15 p.m. Thursday are also asked to check dashcam video.

Police ask anyone with information to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
