A man is in critical condition and a suspect is in custody after a stabbing Saturday in Port Alberni.
Port Alberni RCMP say they were contacted about 4:30 p.m. regarding a stabbing in a building on 4th Avenue in the downtown area.
They found a man with multiple stab wounds and transported him to hospital, because sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Emergency Health Services paramedics were busy on other calls and couldn’t attend right away.
“A police officer carried the victim out of the two-storey building and rode in the back seat while attempting to keep pressure on the victim’s wounds,” police said.
sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Emergency Health Services spokesperson Bowen Osoko said at the time, Port Alberni’s three on-duty ambulances were all busy with seriously or immediately life-threatening incident calls that had come in in the previous 30 minutes.
One urgent call from 4 p.m. took two ambulances for safety reasons because RCMP were unable to attend to the scene, Osoko said in a statement.
An ambulance became available at 4:40 p.m. but by that time, police had already transported the patient to hospital, he said.
Paramedics took over care of the man and provided emergency treatment at the hospital until he was admitted into care, Osoko said.
A suspect was located after a search and arrested for aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
The victim and suspect are known to each other, police said.
“Our members made critical decisions and acted swiftly to get the victim the life-saving medical attention he needed,” said Insp. Kim Bruce.
The suspect had a bail hearing Sunday and remains in custody pending further court proceedings.
