The Regional District of Nanaimo is running an alternative approval process to borrow $1.2 million to support the Nanoose Bay reservoir improvement project.

The total project cost would be $2.48 million. Reserve funds and development cost charge funds would pay for the balance of the project’s cost.

If approved, the district would borrow on behalf of property owners in the Nanoose Bay Peninsula Water Service Area in Electoral Area E in Nanoose Bay. Electors in that area have the choice of whether to support the bylaw to allow borrowing.

The project is designed to accommodate expected growth in the area and to improve long-term fire protection and drinking water infrastructure, the district said. It includes renewing the existing Arbutus Reservoir and building another reservoir on Notch Hill.

“These water service improvement are necessary to meet future water demand, security and safety requirements and are not considered to be optional,” the district said in a news release.

The alternative process starts Wednesday, Aug. 14, and runs to 4 p.m. on Sept. 16.

Electors who are opposed to the bylaw, which is needed to authorize the borrowing, can submit a response form by the deadline to register their opposition.

Those in support do not need to respond.

The borrowing will move ahead if fewer than 10 per cent of eligible voters submit forms opposing the plan.

Public information sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 14, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Notch Hill Trailhead, 3220 Fairwinds Dr., Nanoose Bay.
