Saanich police have taken a record number of impaired drivers off the municipality’s roads this year — and the busiest roadblock season is only beginning.

Police said as of early September, the number of drivers given immediate roadside prohibitions for alcohol and drugs had hit 468, surpassing the total for 2023.

As of Nov. 30, 580 drivers had been taken off the road, setting a record for roadside prohibitions since the introduction of the program in 2010, police said.

Police said Thursday on social media that they plan to step up Counterattack roadblocks throughout December, looking for drivers impaired by drugs and alcohol.

Drivers are being warned to “think and drink responsibly,” by calling a taxi or hailing a ride share, taking public transit or arranging for a designated driver.
