For the 12th year in a row, we are featuring Robert Bateman’s art on our front page as a gift to our readers.
This year’s selection is Snowy Sheep and Barn, a mixed media piece on art board painted in 1982.
This is what Robert has to say about his work:
There are still places where one can see the timeless activities of man and nature. Farming has changed in many ways since the 1950s. It has become more like mass production factories and has attempted to eliminate the natural impact of the elements.
Although this is a scene which happened a short time ago, it could have happened, in every detail, a century ago. The fencing in the barnyard is split cedar rails and the siding on the barn probably came from the original white pine on the property.
With the gentle snow drifting down, the sheep will slowly make their way to the protection of the barn for the night.
The flat, almost abstract patterns of white on gray and gray on white reminds me of an old photograph or etching.
