A celebration of the life of former Langford councillor and sportsman Roger Wade was held at Starlight Stadium on Wednesday.

Wade, who died last month at age 61, served on Langford council for four terms, beginning in 2008, and was the general manger of the West Shore Rebels football club.

The Rebels, calling Wade “a beloved husband, father, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched many lives,” asked everyone to wear a sports jersey to the event.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to KidSport Greater Victoria in honour of Wade. The charity provides grants to cover registration fees, ensuring that all children under 18 in Greater Victoria can participate in sports.

Wade, who lived in Langford for close to 40 years, was also a former board member for the Victoria Shamrocks and the Triangle Athletic Association.

Former Langford mayor Stew Young, who served with Wade on council, described him as “a gentle giant” who played an important role in Langford’s growth.
