A taxi driver is being lauded by West Shore RCMP for helping with a case involving a pair of intoxicated youths.

Police issued a certificate of appreciation to Verrinder Bharmota for his kindness to the youths while he was assisting an officer.

It started on June 13 when police were called about a pair of intoxicated youths wandering in and out of traffic on Jacklin Road in Langford.

Const. Rob Renner was among the officers who attended and realized that the two, a boy and a girl, were in no condition to care for themselves and needed to be taken to their guardians.

The boy was transported by police, but the girl began to have an anxiety attack. After she was assessed by sa国际传媒 Emergency Health Services, it was determined that the presence of police and paramedics was contributing to her condition.

Renner decided to call for a taxi so she wouldn’t have to be in a police vehicle.

Bharmota showed up in his cab and helped paramedics get the girl inside, which took 10 to 15 minutes because of her condition, police said.

Renner followed in his vehicle so he could make sure someone was at home to care for the girl.

“The youth had no money to pay for the taxi and I offered to pay for it myself,” Renner said. “But when [Bharmota] found out why we had called for a taxi in the first place, he was very kind and compassionate with the youth and refused to charge for the ride.”

Bharmota helped the girl out of the cab and up to her home, while Renner stayed some distance away.

Police said Bharmota “really did go above and beyond, as police had very few options of getting the youth home without triggering another stress-induced anxiety attack.”
