Oct. 22, 1954: Socreds ready to ban fireworks

Stories from our pages over the last 150 years.

Municipal Affairs Minister Wesley Black told the Union of sa国际传媒 Municipalities today if municipal authorities want the government to try and ban fireworks his government would be "happy to proceed with it in the House."

Mr. Black made this admission in asking delegates for an expression of opinion on a bill pertaining to sale of fireworks introduced at the last session by the opposition but not acted upon.

The minister said the government was concerned about the problem of "fireworks, BB guns, sling shots and bows and arrows" but was uncertain as to just how much success it would have in attempting to regulate against such things.

"I'm just wondering how far you can go with regulations," he said.

"You can ban the sale of bows and arrows throughout the country but the kids will go ahead and make their own."

He explained he was particularly concerned since his own son had lost an eye as the result of an accident with a bow and arrow. The convention referred the matter of regulations to its executive committee for consideration.
