Dickson is nominated in the Community Reporting category for her article Death at 844 Johnson: ‘We both knew this building was going to kill him.’
The article describes the life of Jamaal Johnson, a 43-year-old Victoria man who predicted his own death when he was moved into social housing at 844 Johnson St., a building notorious in Victoria for substance abuse and crime.
Dickson wrote about the gap between what officials promised and the on-the-ground reality. She described Johnson as a neighbour, a loving father and husband who didn’t get what he needed to escape the life in which he had become stuck.
“It’s important that our readers know what is happening inside 844 Johnson St. Louise pulled back the curtain just enough to let some light shine on the problems in that building,” said publisher Dave Obee.
