A man was arrested Wednesday at a Central Saanich supportive-housing facility after a report of a male with a firearm entering the building.

Central Saanich police responded about 9 a.m. to the report from the Aurora facility at 7606 East Saanich Rd.

The building was evacuated and East Saanich Road was closed in both directions as police dealt with the incident, with assistance from the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team.

Crisis negotiators were brought to the scene to talk to the man, said Central Saanich Deputy Police Chief Kevin Hackett.

He said a suspect was arrested without incident and a firearm was seized about 12:05 p.m.

“We’re continuing our investigation and hoping to forward charges to Crown when we can,” Hackett said.

He said there happened to be an unrelated incident at the Aurora at the same time that involved a call for an ambulance.

“We had to escort emergency-health professionals into the building to render aid to someone else there,” Hackett said. “It was bad timing for us under the circumstances.”
