A pair of traffic stops months apart by Lake Cowichan RCMP has resulted in an ongoing drug-trafficking investigation.

The first was in January, when officers pulled over a vehicle in Youbou and seized drugs, cash and weapons.

That led to a charge of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and a weapons charge against a 39-year-old Lake Cowichan resident.

The next stop happened in early June when police responded to a complaint of a man asleep at the wheel in a vehicle on Cowichan Lake Road.

Drugs and cash were seized from the vehicle and the man was taken into custody.

Lake Cowichan RCMP then joined with the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team on June 20 to execute search warrants at two residences in the town and recovered further evidence linked to the investigation.

“Substance abuse and addiction has a hugely negative impact on our communities, and Lake Cowichan is not immune,” said Lake Cowichan RCMP Const. Brian Smith. “We are committed to holding drug-traffickers responsible, and we thank the public for reporting suspicious activities which have aided this important work.”

The investigations are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lake Cowichan RCMP at 250-749-6668.
