Victoria police are investigating a brawl involving nearly 30 teens in Fernwood early Saturday morning that sent two girls to hospital with head injuries.

Police spokesman Sgt. Grant Hamilton said investigators aren't sure how the fight started, but two teenage girls were reported to have been punched and kicked in the head.

Stephanie Voldeng said her 17-year-old daughter, Ayla, was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital with a concussion.

Voldeng said she's thankful her daughter's injuries weren't much worse.

Ayla told her mother she had been walking with friends in Fernwood Square when a friend's cellphone was stolen by an unknown male.

They chased the man around a corner and were swarmed by dozens of his friends.

Ayla was knocked to the ground and her friends were punched and kicked in the head, Voldeng said.

Police were called around 12:30 a.m., and members of the forensic identification unit arrived to take photographs and collect evidence.

Some of the kids, ages 15 to 17, had been drinking, Hamilton said.

He said several youth were brought to the station for questioning but some have been unco-operative, making it difficult to lay charges.

Police continue to investigate.
