A boat in Ucluelet’s small-craft harbour burned and sank early Thursday as firefighters battled high winds to control the fire’s spread.
“The wind was blowing the flames right across the dock, which was 30 feet wide,” said Fire Chief Rick Geddes. “It was really strong winds. There was significant damage to the dock itself.”
The fire in the 42-foot craft was reported about 1:30 a.m., he said, and the vessel was fully involved when crews arrived. “It burned for quite some time,” he said.
The boat also remained afloat for quite awhile because the fibreglass hull was staying intact, said Geddes, noting it was the second boat fire in the past week. While there was some heat damage to a number other vessels, firefighters were able to keep it to a minimum, Geddes said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
