IQALUIT, Nunavut — Sabina Gold and Silver Corp. says it will begin construction on a gold mine in southwestern Nunavut next year.

President and chief executive officer Bruce McLeod says it's a milestone decision for the company.

Sabina says all pre-development activities have been completed, including extending an all-weather air strip and procuring construction equipment.

It also says the project has received all major permits and authorizations for construction and operations.

Sabina says it expects production at the mine to begin in 2025.

A 2021 feasibility study estimates it should produce about 223,000 ounces of gold annually over 15 years.

Sabina has signed a 20-year renewable land use agreement with the Kitikmeot Inuit Association including sustainability initiatives.
