EDMONTON — Caucus members of Alberta’s governing Progressive Conservatives are in a meeting to pick an interim leader who will take over as premier from the resigning Alison Redford.
Deputy premier Dave Hancock, who supported Redford as she tried to weather the unrest around her, says he wouldn’t mind taking on the job for continuity’s sake.
But he says he has no interest in the job full time.
Cabinet minister Doug Griffiths, who ran in the last leadership race, says he isn’t interested in becoming permanent leader this time around.
Finance Minister Doug Horner says it’s still too early to say for sure, but he isn’t ruling out another run at the top job.
Horner was one of the top contenders in the leadership race that Redford won in the fall of 2011.
Redford resigned Wednesday and is to formally step down on Sunday.
Her resignation followed weeks of open caucus fighting stemming from her lavish travel expenses and from disillusionment with her and the direction of her government.
