A Nova Scotia man is in hospital with a broken leg after falling on a coastal Newfoundland hiking trail.

Officials say a woman and her husband were walking along the Skerwink Trail about three kilometres from Port Rexton on Friday morning when the 61-yearold man fell.

The man was carried more than a kilometre on a stretcher to a boat and brought to Trinity East, where he was picked up by an ambulance and taken to a hospital in Clarenville.

He was then taken to a hospital in St. John's for further treatment.
