A Regina man was sentenced Thursday to seven years in prison for smothering the 18-month-old son of his former fianc脙漏e.

Jason Will, 25, was convicted of manslaughter this month in the little boy's death.

Court heard that Will admitted he had placed his hand over Raime Myers's mouth when the child wouldn't go to sleep.

The boy's mother, Jessica Myers, did not say anything following the sentencing.

But her grandmother, Betty Sproule, said she doesn't know what justice is.

"There will never be closure to losing a child," Sproule said outside court. "In the three years, he's never admitted any responsibility."

Will's uncle, Bernie Price, said there's a reason for that.

"They say he didn't show remorse. That's because he was not guilty, he did not do this, " Price said.

Price said the family has launched an appeal "to free our son and family member."

Sproule said the only good thing about the day was "seeing [Will] being led away in handcuffs."
