Oceanside residents will recognize Relaxation Day on Wednesday. The day, recognized in the U.S., has been adopted by Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
Started as national Slacker Day a few years ago in the U.K., the idea caught on in the U.S. and is now gaining a foothold on Vancouver Island.
"It's like a local proclamation," said Parksville Mayor Chris Burger.
"The thing about our own Relaxation Day, here, we have absolutely nothing planned, and that's quite intentional."
Oceanside has proportionately higher senior populations than most of the country and it's because "we've got relaxation down to a science," Burger explained.
"When you go to your doctor they don't tell you: 'You need to work more, sleep less, and above all, make sure stress is a big part of your daily routine,' " said Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek.
