It is a shame that a distant viewpoint on Brexit nonsense is marred by the penultimate paragraph being based on an utterly false statement. Wentworth Woodhouse has never been owned by the wife of Jacob Rees-Mogg.

To set the record straight: Wentworth Woodhouse was purchased in March 2017 by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (a registered charity). It was the charity that benefited from the grant referred to in the commentary.

The vendors in 2017 were the Newbold family, who bought the house in 1998 from a bank that had repossessed it from Wensley Haydon-Baillie. Haydon-Baillie had bought the house in 1989. Mrs. Rees-Mogg鈥檚 direct family involvement with the ownership of Wentworth Woodhouse came to an end on the death of her grandfather, the 8th Earl Fitzwilliam, in 1948.

Perhaps a fine example of never letting facts spoil a good story.
