Re: 鈥淏ase immigration decisions on merit,鈥 letter, April 12.
The writer of the letter clearly shows how ignorant many Canadians are about our own immigration system. This might be the root cause of some of the anti-immigration rhetoric out there.
All immigration programs to sa国际传媒 are based on merit, except for the one that allows people to sponsor some family members after five years in the country. They either point to professional experts in their fields or to simpler categories where immigrants are allowed to come to perform work that Canadians would not do, such as picking crops. Also, there are programs for entrepreneurs able to provide employment to Canadians and for investors willing to bring money to support the Canadian economy.
The one thing he got right is to call for more professionals in certain professions. The sad reality is that they do come, but they cannot practise their professions because the regulatory bodies鈥 requirements are so onerous that it becomes almost impossible.
Only a minority with the time and the resources to wait, sometimes up to 10 years, can go through the process. Most of them just give up.
