Re: 鈥淐onsequences and the 1876 Indian Act,鈥 comment, March 31.
I enjoyed the commentary by historian Lynne Stonier-Newman in the Islander, particularly the last few paragraphs.
I was also interested to learn that the government of sa国际传媒 does have a precedent, which is not widely known, for the present situation in Ottawa.
鈥淣ewspapers publicized how John A. Macdonald鈥檚 party鈥檚 clandestine 鈥榖oys in the backroom鈥 had mis-stepped in allowing a Montreal scion, who wanted to finance the CPR鈥檚 construction, to slip $350,000 into the Conservatives鈥 election coffers. The ethical Lord Dufferin, Governor General of sa国际传媒, questioned the morality and legalities of that donation. Macdonald鈥檚 government fell. In the subsequent federal election, Mackenzie鈥檚 inexperienced Liberals won a majority.鈥
I also whole-heartedly agree with Stonier-Newman鈥檚 conclusion: 鈥淚n this era, I believe [Jody] Wilson-Raybould and [Jane] Philpott bring to sa国际传媒鈥檚 governance values and ethics similar to Lord Dufferin鈥檚. Don鈥檛 we need and deserve that non-negotiable level of honesty from all our government鈥檚 representatives?鈥 Yes,聽we do.
